The Potsdam Eye Clinic as
a partner in sports

Visual problems in sports

In sports, vision serves for orientation, for controlling one's own movements, for anticipating and registering external movements, and - from the perspective of the sports instructor, coach, or referee - for observing and evaluating movements.

Surveys in various sports show that approximately 30% of all athletes practice their sport with poor vision (i.e., without the necessary visual aids or with insufficient correction). Depending on the sport, this also applies to competitive sports. Approximately 30% of top athletes examined as part of visual performance diagnostics must be classified as visually impaired and subsequently provided with adequate correction.

When considering the optical correction options of glasses or contact lenses, it must be noted that wearing glasses is a hindrance in most sports. However, wearing contact lenses also causes problems for many athletes.

The following problems, among others, were frequently reported by the athletes we looked after:

  • Glasses slipping due to increased sweating
  • Contact lenses slipping, especially in situations requiring maximum concentration, irritates athletes, e.g., in pole vaulting
  • Contact lenses “freezing” in dry air and extremely low temperatures, e.g., in Northern Europe or Salt Lake City in 2002, e.g., in cross-country skiing
  • Extreme centrifugal forces, e.g. in skeleton, can cause contact lenses to “pop” out of the eye.

Some of the reports from the athletes who come to us are quite surprising, as we were not familiar with them before. In order to put ourselves in the athletes' shoes, employees from our clinic regularly attend competitions in a wide variety of sports. One particular highlight was our (active) participation in the 2006 Skeleton Cup in Altenberg.

15 years as a service partner of the German Sports Aid Foundation

From 2002 to 2017, as a service partner of the "Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe" (German Sport Support), the clinic offered help to athletes by changing the refractive power of the eye (refractive surgery) thus enabling clear vision without glasses or contact lenses. Eyewear or contact lenses are often a disadvantage, especially in competitive sports. One of the services offered by the Potsdam Eye Clinic for the sponsored athletes was a free pre-examination with detailed advice and information. In addition, only one small contribution from the athlete had to be made during an intervention. More than 180 athletes (both junior and top athletes) have benefited from the cooperation with the Potsdam Eye Clinic.

Athletes report

Unfortunately, we had to delete the content of this page, which contained testimonials from many athletes. The German Medicines Advertising Act prohibits statements from patients.

As a service partner of the German Sports Aid Foundation, from 2002 to 2017 we treated and cared for not only many Olympic, world, and European champions, but also all sponsored athletes on equal terms—including, of course, those in disabled sports.

Thank you for your understanding.

Further partnerships

Potsdam Royals

Over the years, the Potsdam Royals have established themselves as one of the leading teams in the erima German Football League (GFL), the highest division for American football in Germany. They have participated in national and international competitions and achieved several successes, including participation in the German Championship Games and other major competitions. Runners-up in 2022, the Potsdam Royals won the GFL Bowl in 2023 and were crowned German champions.

The team is made up of talented athletes, including players, coaches and support staff, who are dedicated to American football. They not only represent the sport, but also the city of Potsdam and the Brandenburg region.

In recent years, American football has become increasingly popular in Germany and the Potsdam Royals have helped to promote enthusiasm for the sport. Not only are they successful on the field, but they are also involved in the community and promote the development of young people in American football.

The Potsdam Eye Clinic has been a partner of the Potsdam Royals since 2022.

KC Potsdam

The athletes of the KCP are not only popular, but are, above all, winners: The KC Potsdam is probably the most successful canoe club in the world. The athletes regularly win numerous medals at national, European and world championships and, of course, at the Olympic Games. 103 Olympic victories and world champion titles, plus 81 silver and 75 bronze medals - it is an impressive record that can be attributed to the Potsdam canoe racers.

The Potsdam Eye Clinic supports the KCP as a member of their support society, e.g. through direct help by providing a 10-person canoe to the KCP for the general sport.

Germany in the America's Cup

In the preparation for the America's Cup 2007 the Potsdam Eye Clinic supported the German team. A partnership was intended to be established, but the German activities were cancelled prematurely.
